Buy Stop vs Buy Limit: which order matches your entry price?

In the Forex/CFD examples here, Buy Stop waits above the current Ask and Buy Limit below it. Follow four EUR/USD quote paths to see why activation, a chart touch and an actual fill are different.

The essentials

  1. For the Forex/CFD setup used here, Buy Stop waits above the current Ask; Buy Limit waits below it.

  2. A stop level is a trigger, not a maximum purchase price. A buy limit caps the execution price but does not guarantee a fill.

  3. Check the relevant quote, order status and symbol rules. A touch on a Bid chart does not prove that Ask reached a buy order.

The difference starts with the current Ask

Buy Stop and Buy Limit are pending buy orders. In the ordinary Forex/CFD setup described by MetaTrader 5, Buy Stop is placed above the current Ask and Buy Limit below it. Ask is the price quoted to buy; Bid is the price quoted to sell.

With EUR/USD at Bid 1.1000 / Ask 1.1002, a Buy Stop at 1.1020 waits for a rise. A Buy Limit at 1.0980 waits for an Ask of 1.0980 or lower. These are entry conditions, not predictions.

Scope: the examples use an OTC Forex/CFD quote model, with no existing position. Exchange-traded instruments can use different triggers and placement rules. Check the symbol specification rather than applying the diagram to every market.

Buy Stop: wait for the buying quote to rise

With Ask at 1.1002, the hypothetical Buy Stop at 1.1020 remains pending while Ask is below 1.1020. Reaching or passing that level satisfies the price condition. Execution then follows the provider's rules; 1.1020 is not a ceiling on what you may pay.

A Buy Stop can be used to enter after a move through a higher level. It does not confirm that the rise will continue: price can reverse immediately after the fill.

FINRA's stop-order explanation makes the distinction between activation and execution price for securities. Use the broker's execution policy for the corresponding Forex/CFD details, including gaps, available prices and circumstances in which an instruction can be rejected.

Buy Limit: set a maximum buying price

The hypothetical Buy Limit at 1.0980 requests a purchase at 1.0980 or lower. With Ask still at 1.1002, that condition is not met. If the price never returns to the eligible range, the order can remain unfilled until it is cancelled or expires.

A Buy Limit controls price, not whether or how much will fill. Investor.gov's order guide explains this distinction for securities. Available volume, order handling and validity still matter.

A cheaper entry is not automatically a safer trade. The market may keep falling after the purchase. A limit sets the acceptable entry price; it does not set the eventual exit or the maximum loss on the position.

Follow the quote through each order condition

The levels are fixed: Buy Stop 1.1020 and Buy Limit 1.0980, starting from Bid 1.1000 / Ask 1.1002. Select a price path and move between quotes. Compare the Ask condition with the hypothetical fill for each independent alternative.

Hypothetical EUR/USD quotes for an OTC Forex/CFD model, with no existing position. Orders are assumed to be accepted and active, the session open, and margin and liquidity sufficient for an immediate full fill. Real orders may remain unfilled or fill partly; queueing, latency and the broker’s full execution policy are not simulated.

Ask falls to the Buy Limit level, then rebounds.

How this example works

This example uses an OTC Forex/CFD model for EUR/USD: a buy entry is tested against Ask. Check your platform, symbol and broker’s execution rules; exchange-traded instruments may use different triggers.

The Buy Stop at 1.10200 and the Buy Limit at 1.09800 are compared independently from an initial Bid/Ask of 1.10000/1.10020. One EUR/USD pip is 0.00010. Both examples assume accepted, valid orders, an open trading session and sufficient margin.

Every qualifying Ask is assumed to have enough liquidity for an immediate full fill. A Buy Stop becomes a market order and fills at the first qualifying Ask; a Buy Limit fills at a qualifying Ask no higher than its limit. The model does not interpolate a price across a gap.

Real orders can remain unfilled or fill only partly. Queue priority, latency, rejection, slippage after activation, spreads beyond these quotes, expiry and broker distance rules are not simulated. No position size, fees, exit or profit and loss are calculated.

Why did the candle touch but my Buy Limit stay pending?

First check which price the candle represents. MetaQuotes' price-data documentation distinguishes Bid-based OTC charts from Last-based exchange charts. The low of a Bid candle does not establish the lowest Ask during the same interval.

Bid at 1.0980 can touch a 1.0980 Buy Limit on the chart while Ask stays at 1.0982. The buying quote is still 0.0002 above the limit, so the order's Ask condition is not met.

The reverse visual surprise is possible for Buy Stop: Ask can reach the higher trigger while the Bid chart is still below it. A change in the spread can change this relationship. Do not use an unrelated chart feed as proof of the exact quote available on your account.

MT5's Show Ask price line shows the current Ask, not historical Ask candles. To check a past fill or non-fill, use the order ticket, broker server time and relevant Bid/Ask ticks.

What changes when price skips the level?

After an upward gap, suppose the first executable Ask is 1.1032. The 1.1020 Buy Stop triggers and, under the model's full-liquidity assumption, fills at 1.1032: 1.1032 − 1.1020 = 0.0012 = 12 EUR/USD pips. This measures the entry-price difference, not final profit or loss.

A Buy Limit at 1.0980 cannot simply become an unrestricted purchase at 1.1032. Its price condition is not met there. A downward gap into an eligible price range may allow a better-priced fill, but the available liquidity and actual order rules still determine execution. Our slippage guide separates spread, price movement and realised fills.

Buy Stop Limit is different: in MT5, reaching its stop level places a Buy Limit at a separately specified price. That limit may remain unfilled. The SEC's stop-order bulletin explains the trigger/limit distinction for securities; MT5's own rules define the Forex/CFD order.

The four basic pending orders at a glance

This is a placement and price-condition map for the Forex/CFD model used above. A satisfied condition is not proof of a completed deal. “Current” refers to the quote when placing the order.

Sell orders use Bid rather than Ask. For exchange instruments, MetaQuotes documents different rules, including exchange-specific triggers and limits placed through the current quote. Check the symbol and execution mode before using this table.

Buy Stop is not the Stop Loss on a long position

Here, a Buy Stop is an instruction to enter a purchase. A Stop Loss attached to the resulting long position is a separate exit instruction. Putting “Stop” in the entry type does not attach a protective exit, and putting “Limit” in the entry type does not cap the position's total loss.

Check volume, the proposed exit and the consequences of a worse fill together. A position-size calculation can translate an assumed entry-to-stop distance into a hypothetical size; execution can differ from those assumptions. The trailing-stop guide explains the exit mechanisms separately.

If a position is already open, check the account's netting or hedging mode: another buy may change existing exposure. These examples start with no position.

Check these fields before placing an MT5 pending order

Use the official MT5 order-entry instructions with your broker's symbol specification. Menu labels and available fields vary by application and instrument.

  • Confirm the exact symbol and current Bid/Ask; similar-looking instruments can have different contract sizes and sessions.
  • Select Pending Order and the intended type. Recheck the price against Ask for these buy examples.
  • Check volume, the contract specification and available margin; an entry level alone says nothing about exposure.
  • Inspect any separate Stop Loss and Take Profit fields. An empty or zero field is not a protective exit.
  • Check expiry, trading hours, price increments and minimum distances. Keep the broker's confirmation or rejection message.

MetaQuotes lists symbol-specific order, expiry and distance settings. There is no universal MT5 minimum distance or expiry option. If an order is rejected, check its error message and the symbol rules.

Diagnose an unfilled order in the right order

First confirm that the order was accepted and active. Then check the relevant Ask at the recorded server time, followed by the price condition and available execution volume. A missing fill is not automatically slippage.

  • Still pending: check whether the relevant Ask condition was reached, not just the chart level.
  • Expired or cancelled: check the validity period, session rules and order history.
  • Rejected: read the recorded reason, including price settings or available margin.
  • Partially or fully filled: compare the actual deals and volumes, not only the requested order price.

A useful support request contains the ticket, exact symbol, account server, server timestamp and expected versus observed result. Attach the relevant quote evidence. A screenshot with only a candle and a horizontal line may leave out the price needed to settle the question.

Compare platform access, then verify execution terms

Frequently asked questions

Is Buy Stop above or below the current price?

In the Forex/CFD model here, it is above the current Ask. Ask must reach or pass the stop level to meet the price condition. The eventual execution price is not capped at that trigger.

Why did my Buy Limit not fill when the chart touched?

The chart may show Bid while the order needs an eligible Ask. Also check whether the order was active, the session was open and the order's execution requirements were met. A chart touch alone does not establish a fill.

Can a Buy Stop fill above my requested price?

Yes, an ordinary stop trigger is not a maximum buying price. A gap or fast move can lead to a higher execution price under the provider's rules. Buy Stop Limit is a separate instruction with an additional price restriction and non-execution risk.

Can I put a Buy Limit above the current Ask?

The ordinary Forex/CFD setup here uses a Buy Limit below Ask. In MT5 exchange execution, a Buy Limit above Ask may be immediately executable. Check the symbol and execution mode.

Is Buy Stop the same as Stop Loss?

No. The Buy Stop here is an entry instruction; Stop Loss is a separate instruction for an existing or resulting position. Similar terminology does not mean that an entry automatically has an exit attached.

Which is better, Buy Stop or Buy Limit?

Neither is universally better. Buy Stop matches a higher-price trigger; Buy Limit sets a maximum buying price. Match the order to your intended price condition, then check exposure and execution risk. Neither guarantees profit or protects the account by itself.
